Why spring is the right time for a Wellington house wash
Spring sits in the sweet spot for Wellington exterior cleaning, past the worst of winter mould, before summer hosts and weddings. Here's why, and how to book it right.
Spring (September–November) is the best window for a Wellington house wash.
Three reasons: winter mould has peaked (most to clean off), plants recover fast in spring soil temperatures, and the calendar gives you a buffer before summer events. Book 6–8 weeks ahead, the September rush is real.

The question we get more than any other in August is: “When’s the best time to book a wash?” The answer is consistent enough to plan around.
The seasonal logic for Wellington
Wellington’s exterior-cleaning year breaks roughly into four phases:

| Summer (Dec–Feb) | Fine but late | Cosmetic peak; great for events but mould has been on the house all winter. |
The reason spring is the sweet spot is biology, not just calendar:
- Winter mould has peaked. June–August is when mould and lichen do their most aggressive growth on south-facing walls. By September there's something to clean off.
- Plants are growing back fast. Spring soil temperature means established gardens shrug off chemistry rinse-down within a week. Mid-summer or autumn, recovery is slower.
- Weather windows are predictable. Wellington spring has more dry-day clusters than winter, and warmer rinse temperatures.
- Calendar buffer. Cleaned in September, you have months of clear exterior before summer hosting, Christmas guests, or open homes.
The September rush: a large share of our annual residential bookings happen September through November. Book 6–8 weeks ahead if you want a specific weekend slot, especially for properties on the market or hosting events.
What about other seasons?
Autumn (March–May) is fine for gutter cleans and pre-winter sorts. The roof and house wash work too, but the result lasts less time, six months of winter mould will undo some of it.
Winter (June–August) we don’t recommend for house washes unless something specific is going on (urgent pre-sale, event, mould visible from inside). Short days, slippery roofs, slow drying.
Summer (December–February) is fine and we work through it. But booking the same day you go on holiday isn’t ideal, best to clean before Christmas if you’re hosting, not after.
How to book the spring slot
Three things help if you want the September–November window:
- Get the quote in by mid-August. Quote response is still within 24 hours; scheduling fills earlier than the quote pipeline.
- Be flexible on the day. Saturdays book first; weekdays are easier to slot in.
- Bundle if you can. Gutter + house + driveway in a single visit is cheaper than three separate bookings and faster to schedule.
